SOUTHERN WV BASSMASTERS 3RD ANNUAL KIDS FISHING DERBY
Southern WV Bassmasters held its 3rd annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 21st. It was a tremendous
success with 52 of the 59 kids participating catching at least one fish for a total of 222 fish being caught. The
kids competed in three age divisions (6 and under, 7 - 10, and 11 - 14) for prizes being awarded to the top 4 places
in each age group based upon the number of fish caught. In addition, each age group had a big fish competition
with prizes being awarded to the top three in each age group based upon the length of the fish.
Below is the breakdown of fish caught:
- 134 Bluegill
- 75 Catfish
- 8 Crappie
- 4 Bass
- 1 Carp
- 222 Total
SWVB Conservation & Youth Director Andrew Albert organized the event in which we were able to collect enough
contributions to ensure that every participant received a welcome bag containing snacks and other materials, bait
and/or tackle, and free drinks throughout the event. During the tabulation of the results club members kept the
kids active by holding a fishing, outdoors, and WV trivia contest in which the kids where asked various trivia
questions and awarded prizes (packs of lures, crank baits, spinner baits, lines, hooks, etc.) for their correct
answers. We were able to make sure that every kid received a prize. Also, Andrew held a drawing for the kids who
did not place and we were able to give away 2 rod & reel combos, a tackle bag, a tackle box, and other miscellaneous
fishing gear. After the awards ceremony everyone was treated to a hot dog and covered dish luncheon.
Members from SWVB, along with volunteers, sponsors, and parents, supervised and officiated the 4 hour event.
We certainly give the WV Bass Federation a huge thanks for helping with your generous support. Without your donation
we could not have made this event as special as it was. We received countless compliments from the kids and their
parents about how nice the day was and how much the kids enjoyed themselves. I think all involved would agree that
June 21st made a positive impact on a lot of kid's lives by introducing them to the great sport of fishing.
Another huge thanks needs to be given to Andrew Albert for organizing and bringing this event to reality. It took
a lot of work by him and other members of SWVB to pull this event off.
