2008 WEST VIRGINIA BASS FEDERATION JUNIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2008 West Virginia Bass Federation Junior State Championship was contested under ominous skies on beautiful Sutton Lake May 31, 2008. However, other than a couple quick rain showers the weather was quite acceptable considering the severe weather passing just to the north.

The Days Inn in Flatwoods hosted Friday night's pre-tournament meeting where rules, safety, partner parings and boat captain assignments were the main topics of discussion. After drawing for door prizes, anglers and boat captains were paired and each angler received a tackle pack and hat as they exited the meeting room to discuss the next day's strategy.

Saturday morning's launch went off without a hitch, well except for a quick run back to the Days Inn to buy a fishing license on-line. What would we do without the internet? The competition day started at 6:59 a.m. for the twenty-three anglers with two slots in the National Guard Junior World Championship at steak. One slot in the 11-14 age group and another in the 15-18 age group.

Rumors of several limits spread through the parking lot as anglers made their way to check-in before the 3:00 p.m. deadline. A cookout with hotdogs and hamburgers added a nice touch to the weigh-in. Also, thanks to all the boat captains for their time and expense because without them this event would not happen. Thanks to the parents also for getting your children involved in the sport of bass fishing.

When the scales closed on the 2008 WVBF Junior State Championship the rumors of several limits became reality as eleven of twenty-three anglers weighed in a five bass limit. It should also be noted that a twelve inch size limit was in effect. I'm sure an adult tournament would have struggled to achieve the same percentage of limits.

In the 11-14 age group Zach Whitten from Oceana, WV defended his last year's championship by capturing first place with a five bass limit weighing six pounds and eleven ounces. Finishing second was Henry Schomaker followed by Phillip Browning and Winston Wade. Devin Southall caught the lunker of the tournament which weighed two pounds and seven ounces.

In the 15-18 age group Jimmy Davis from Clarksburg, WV captured first place with five bass weighing six pounds and four ounces. Just one ounce behind in second place was Cory Straight followed by J C Christopher and Nick Lambert.

Whitten and Davis will represent the West Virginia Bass Federation at the 2008 National Guard Junior World Championship on Lake Monticello in Columbia, S. C. August 15-16, 2008 where they will compete for $30,000 in scholarships. The Championship is being held in conjunction with the Forrest Wood Cup - the nation's most lucrative bass-fishing championship.
