Second Annual West Virginia Bass Federation Invitational
Championship
(Morgantown) -- Frank Haught and Kevin McClain put together more than 20-pounds of bass to capture the second annual
West Virginia Bass Federation Invitational Championship tournament on the Monongahela River in Morgantown.
Haught and McClain brought an amazing 12 plus pounds to the scales at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park on day one of the
two-day event. The first day's creel bested the second place total by better than three pounds.
Haught and McClain, who pre-fished for five straight days in preparation for the event, finished with a total of
20.56 pounds anchored by their largest bass weighing 3.23 pounds. Their efforts netted them the $5,000 first prize.
With Haught and McClain running away with the event, the closest battle was for second place. Scott Dettman and
Mark Godwin delivered two solid days of fishing to capture the number 2 spot and a check for $2,250. Dettman and
Godwin entered day two in fourth place, separated by their nearest competitors by only ounces. They finished with
a total weight of 17.10 pounds, including the day two lunker weighing 3.30 pounds.
Bob and Jack Flint captured third place with a two-day total weight of 14.39 pounds. The position won the two anglers
$1,300. Fourth place went to Jay Clingenpeel and Fred Lucas who cash a one-thousand dollar check. Jim Merical and
Ryan Harmon overcame a difficult start on Saturday to finish 5th and claim a check for $900.
Rounding out the top ten were Curtis and Galen Ash in sixth place. Rodney Hatfield and Charles Boyce secured seventh.
The eighth place team was Lonnie Tanner and Robert Harkness. Jody Green and Thomas Cooper finish ninth and tenth
place went to Charlie and Jeff Hanshaw.
The West Virginia Bass Federation Championship Tournament paid back at least $100 to all 50-teams as part of the
total purse of $18,000.
The WV Bass Federation lauded the efforts of the City of Morgantown, Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau,
MountainFest, and an army of tournament sponsors for the highly successful event. Organizers are promising to grow
the tournament in the years to come as a way to showcase the city's developing riverfront and the Mon River.
