FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Bass Federation (TBF), FLW Outdoors take Charlotte students fishing on Lake Wylie
PONCA CITY, Okla. (May 3, 2007) - Students and adult advisors representing five teams from Charlotte area schools
and the local park and recreation system participated in a "Pro-Am" fishing event April 20 on Lake Wylie
near Charlotte, N.C., in conjunction with The Bass Federation National Championship presented by the National Guard.
A student angler and adult advisor representing each school fished as a team with the help of a TBF National Championship
contender serving as their guide and mentor during the event.
"The students participating were selected by their classmates and adult mentors," said TBF National Youth
Director Mark Gintert. "We believe this event created the perfect opportunity for the students to see exactly
what it's like to participate in a competitive angler's world and have some fun doing it. FLW Outdoors provided
sponsor wrapped boats, just like the pros use, and TBF National Championship contenders showed the students skills
that they learned in school that are required to be successful in a major tournament setting."
At the end of the outing, the teams were treated to lunch and then returned in their sponsor wrapped Ranger boats
and Chevy trucks to the weigh-in arena where the host of "FLW Outdoors" television, Charlie Evans, brought
the teams up on stage. It came down to two teams positioning for the win, both with five-bass limits. When they
squared off at the scale, the Locust Middle School team led by Taylor Frayley pulled out a 1-pound victory over
student angler Hank Holden's team with a total weight of 11 pounds, 15 ounces to win a Wal-Mart gift card that
will be used to buy tackle for their school fishing club.
"What an awesome event for these outstanding kids," TBF President Robert Cartlidge said. "I think
our championship anglers were more excited than the students. The anglers did a fantastic job of getting these
school teams on fish, FLW provided equipment, personnel and the pro's weigh-in stage, and FSN (Fox Sports Net)
provided the camera crews. All of that made for a very exciting time for these teens."
The Bass Federation Inc. (TBF) is owned by those it serves and is dedicated to the sport of fishing. TBF affiliated
state federations and their member clubs conduct more than 20,000 fishing, youth and conservation events at the
local level each year and have provided the foundation for the entire bass fishing industry for more than 35 years.
In 2006 TBF partnered with the largest tournament operations and marketing organization in the world, FLW Outdoors.
