CHARLESTON , W.Va. -- Gov. Bob Wise announced that entries are being accepted for the Fourth Annual Governor's
Youth Wild Turkey & Bass Challenge.
This is an exciting program because it encourages the contestants to research their subject matter and practice
their communication skills, Wise said. The winners have a rare opportunity to learn first-hand about our state's
wildlife and fish management programs and to be exposed to career opportunities they might not see otherwise.
Wise praised the West Virginia Wild Turkey Federation, the West Virginia B.A.S.S. Federation, Mossy Oak and the
Flatwoods Days Inn for helping to make this event possible.
The Youth Wild Turkey &Bass Challenge is part of the Governor's Youth in the Outdoors program, which is designed
to develop skill-oriented activities for the state's youth. This program promotes a better understanding and appreciation
of conservation of the state's natural resources.
The theme for the essay contest is What can I, as an individual do to protect our hunting and fishing heritage?
The contest is open to West Virginia students ages 10 to 17. The essay has a 500-word limit and must be typed,
double-spaced and postmarked no later than April 1, 2004. Information has been sent to each county school superintendent
and to local sportsman's clubs. A committee will select 10 winners and three alternates.
The winners will travel to Flatwoods May 13-15 for instruction from Division of Natural Resources wildlife biologists
and conservation officers about wildlife management, turkey trapping for study, fish population surveys, wildlife
ecology and hunter safety education. Winners also will participate in spring gobbler hunting and a bass fishing
trip, accompanied by experienced turkey hunting and bass fishing guides.
