March 1, 2003 marked this year's grand finale for Casting Kids to see who would earn a birth to represent West
Virginia at the B.A.S.S. National Championship Casting Kids semi-finals in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in May. This years
winners are no strangers to competing at the national level. The two veterans, Wil Dieffenbauch and Brady Nolan
came out victorious from a field of 19 competitors at this years Casting Kids State Finals.
Fourteen year old Wil Dieffenbauch from Hundred scored a 140 out of a possible 150 to take top honors in the 11-14
age group while the 7-10 age group wound up with a three way tie.
9 year old Brady Nolan of Jacksonburg rose to the occasion in the cast-off where all three competitors had one
chance to cast from 30 feet away for the best possible score. As Brady began the motion of his cast, you could
hear a pin drop as he shut his eyes tight and let the Zebco 33 fly towards the target. As the Berkley Power Bait
Jig and Trailer hit the target, the crowd roared with excitement knowing that Brady had just landed a perfect 50.
Winners at the B.A.S.S. National Championship Casting Kids semi-finals will qualify to compete at the Bassmasters
Classic later this summer. Deiffenbauch and Nolan both qualified for the state championship through local Casting
Kids events held by Northern Mountaineer Bass Club. We wish Brady and Wil the best of luck next month in Tuscaloosa.
