WHEELING -- Outdoorsmen in this area appear to be in for a treat in the near future as Cabela's plans to locate
one of its outdoor stores in Ohio County.
Cabela's is not your average store. It's other stores actually serve as tourist destinations for catalogue shoppers
and outdoors enthusiasts.
The Wheeling area is looking at it as something more than a store but as a boost to its economy, according to a
story in the Wheeling newspaper.
"It's one of those things that comes along once in a lifetime,'' Ohio County Commision president Randy Wharton
was quoted as saying.
The new store is thought to be of such importance to helping improve the retail community in the area that Gov.
Bob Wise was expected to attend the press conference held Thursday night.
"The governor is going to make a major economic develoment announcent for the Northern Panhandle, involving
millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs," siad Amy Shuler-Goodwin, spokesman for the governor.
The Cabela's store is expected to employ 500 worker and with the entire deal could eventually lead to 1,100 jobs.
Cabela's often attacks crowds from throughout the area.
"The company has a track record of bringing in millions of people a year," Wharton told the Wheeling
newspaper. "When they create that kind of traffice -- that's the kind of thing people need."
It's expected people from Morgantown would venture into Wheeling for the experience.
Cabela's was founded in 1961 as a small kitchen-table operation near Sidney, Neb., by brothers Dick and Jim Cabela.
They call the company the "World's Foremost Outfitter" of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear.
Cabela's also operates retail stores in Sidney and Kearney, Neb.; Owatonna and East Grand Forks, Minn.; Mitchell,
S.D.; Dundee, Mich.; Kansas City, Kan., and Prairie du Chien, Wis., and has announced plans to open at 225,000-square
foot store on a 100-acre site near Hamburg, Pa |
