The 2003 Governor's Youth Wild Turkey and Bass Challenge
announced
[January 31, 2003]
It brings us great pleasure to share with you information about one of West Virginia's most exciting educational
programs. This program encourages youth to not only learn about wildlife conservation and management, but provides
opportunities to interact with some of the nation's leading experts in the natural resources field and outdoor
writers.
The program is called "The 2003 Governor's Youth Wild Turkey and Bass Challenge," and this spring ten-essay
contest winners will be chosen to travel to Flatwoods for three days (May 15 through May 17) of instructions from
wildlife biologists on wildlife and fisheries management programs. The itinerary includes demonstrations on wild
turkey trapping and fish sampling techniques, wildlife ecology programs and other educational subjects related
to the outdoors. The event will culminate with the winners participating in guided spring gobbler hunts and a bass
fishing trip at Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park with accomplished guides from the West Virginia BASS Federation.
The theme for this year's essay is "Why hunting and fishing is important to me." The essay must be
500 words or less, typed, double-spaced, and postmarked no later than April 1, 2003. Essays should be mailed
to Marshall Snedegar, DNR Wildlife Resources Section, Capitol Complex, Building 3, Room 842, Charleston, WV 25305.
The challenge is open to only West Virginia enrolled students ten through seventeen years of age. A committee will
select ten winners and three alternates.
Governor Bob Wise is very enthused about this program and has been a past participant. We know he will try to take
time out of his busy schedule to participate again this year. "This is a very exciting program because it
encourages contestants to do some research and practice their writing skills, and the winners have the opportunity
to learn more about our state's wildlife and fish management programs," Governor Wise said when announcing
the first challenge in 2001. "It's also a great chance for them to be exposed to career opportunities they
might not see otherwise, and to have some fun at the same time."
Ed Hamrick, WDNVR Director is very excited about this program and would encourage our members to provide this information
to interested individuals with young hunters and anglers in their families as soon as possible. For more information
about the 2003 Governor's Youth Wild Turkey and Bass Challenge, contact Marshall Snedegar at the West Virginia
Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Section at (304)558-2771, or, msnedegar@dnr.state.wv.us. |
