Career Highlights
A relative newcomer to tournament competition, Smarr didnt even fish until he was 35 years old. He
taught himself the fundamentals of bass fishing and soon thought highly enough of his skills to enter a local tournament.
I blanked, he says with a laugh. But he didnt give up he won another event that same year. As a member of
the Elk River Bassmasters of Charleston, W.Va., he has clawed his way to the top of the B.A.S.S. Federation circuit,
eventually winning the Eastern Divisional on the Ohio River last fall.
Smarr finished eighth in the B.A.S.S. Federation National Championship on Ft. Loudoun and Tellico lakes at Knoxville,
Tenn., to qualify for his first Classic. His string of 17 pounds, 8 ounces of bass ranked him as the top angler
in the Eastern Division.

He has served as president of his B.A.S.S. club and has placed special emphasis on conducting Bassmaster CastingKids
events. Smarr recognizes the intimidation factor federation anglers often face at the Classic. His solution? Just
think of the pros as any other fishermen.
