'Getting in gear'

To everyone who loves the sport of fishing, getting ready for the upcoming season is half the excitement. Rods, reels, lines, lures, new boats and motors, not to mention lakes, rivers or reservoirs. Where does one begin to put together a game plan?

Success is the ultimate reward for a well-executed plan, but you need to decide what that means for you and your skills. You should decide what it is that you want to learn this season, then put together the essential equipment list. Be specific as to what you want to accomplish.

Let me explain how to do this. If there is an area where I lack ability, more than I care to mention, it is contour power trolling for walleyes. It's my goal to become proficient at this technique this summer. Here's my plan:

Understand the critical part to catching walleyes is the presentation: You do not show up for a baseball game in your hockey gear or to power troll with the wrong equipment. First, I need the right boat and motor to give me an edge. My motor selection is an F100 Yamaha four-stroke with optional tiller.

A tiller model allows me to easily stay on structures in wind, waves or current. The four-stroke gives me the extreme quiet that I need when maneuvering in very shallow water. In addition, the 100 horsepower safely handles large waves and strong current while maintaining precise boat control. The openness of a good walleye boat allows easy setting of rods and lines. Most important is the maneuverability of a tiller boat. You can have all the magic baits in the world and they are worthless without boat control.

The rest of the game plan becomes a lot easier when you have a foundation to work from. Now, decide where you will be fishing most of the time - lakes, rivers or reservoirs. Choose electronics that will best suit your needs - GPS, mapping, cone angles and resolution. These are your eyes to the bottom, bait and structure, let alone marking any walleyes.

Now, choose your equipment. Good quality lines and counter reels to duplicate successful patterns whether it's with lead core or super lines for trolling. Now, choose the correct baits that match the forage base that the walleyes are feeding on.

Fishing can be a series of successes for the prepared angler or a series of failures for the unprepared. Decide what you want to accomplish this year. I'll be power trolling my way to walleyes this summer.
